The Multifaceted Roles of LED Lights in Architecture

1 October 2024

Lighting is an essential element in architecture, once used only for visibility, its significance nowadays has grown beyond the basic functions.

It is common to see old buildings or interior spaces revitalised by merely mixing in a few lighting installations. Modern lighting designs can completely transform spaces, affect moods, and create illusions of size; for instance, additional lighting in a small room that is reflecting off bright-colored walls can make the space feel bigger.

LED lights make modern lighting installations hassle-free because they come in a variety of colours, shapes, lengths, and sizes. Some even have Colour Changing Technology (CCT) or can be remotely controlled to adjust the hue and brightness.

LED lights are popular in architectural designs for their functionality, durability, versatility, and energy efficiency. Below are some common uses of the different LED lights in architecture.

Outdoor Applications of LED lights

  • Bollards – LED modules are commonly integrated into the bollard fixtures to provide visibility along pathways, patios, and outdoor spaces. Because these modules are compact and require minimal maintenance, they make practical options for this purpose.

  • Flood lights – Another way LED modules display their versatility is through flood lights, which often use high-intensity LED modules to provide broad and intense illumination. They are suitable for large areas, such as stadiums, building facades and parking lots.

  • Landscape lightings – Side-lit LED bars such as the LBY YF12GD3 or LBY YX06DD8 make functional and durable lighting options for garden paths, trees, sculptures, water features, and under benches or rails. They create a subtle glow and enhance the area’s ambiance, while providing functional lighting.

Indoor Applications of LED lights

  • Cove lights and shadow lights – LED strips provide continuous lighting for cove lights, usually used for ceilings, and artistic hues for shadow lights found mostly behind the bed headboards or shelves. Since they can be customised according to colour temperature, beam angle and intensity, they can instantly transform any space. • Emergency exit lights – found in movie theatres, mall entrances and restaurants, LED modules can easily be fitted into exit signs to provide directional signages for customers. LED modules can be connected to batteries so they can work even without power. And because these modules come with either IP66 or IP67 rating, they can withstand humidity and dust, and are durable enough even for outdoor applications.

  • Wall grazing and wall washing fixtures – Flexible LED Wall Washer SF24JD3-N2523 and CCT Tunable LED Strips LBY SE120LC1-10-DW can be used for wall accents. The distinction between these two is the distance from the wall surface. Wall wash is typically a minimum of 12 inches away from the wall, allowing for an even application of light that gives the wall texture a flat appearance. On the other hand, for a wall grazing detail, the fixture is positioned no further away than 12 inches to the wall to highlight and bring out the wall texture.
